Course overview

Further Maths is designed for students with an enthusiasm for maths, many of whom will go on to degrees in maths, engineering, the sciences and economics. This counts as two subject choices and you will need to have achieved at least grade 8 in GCSE Maths. Most Further Maths students have achieved mainly As and A*s across the board in their GCSEs and the approach and pace reflect this.

Assessment is through examination only.

What will I study?

The qualification is both deeper and broader than A-Level Maths. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A-Level Maths, the A-Level Further Maths core content introduces complex numbers and matrices, fundamental maths ideas with wide applications in maths, engineering, physical sciences and computing. The non-core content will cover statistics and mechanics to a deeper level than studied at A-Level Maths. The additional work in Pure Maths makes it a good choice for students with strong mathematical skills who are planning to study mathematics, physics or engineering at university, and for some courses in Maths (or subjects based on Maths) at Oxford or Cambridge and some of the other Russell Group universities, it is a requirement.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above.
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language.
  • Grade 8 or above in GCSE Maths.
  • This subject must be taken in combination with A-Level Maths.

Additional costs

You will need a Scientific Calculator – minimum requirement is the Casio ClassWizz fx-991Ex .
