Course overview

This study programme is a great opportunity for anyone that is considering returning to education after a period of time and planning on going to university.

Entry requirements

  • You will need grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths, or a Level 2 in Functional Skills.

  • If you don't currently have the entry requirements needed, don't worry, you could study GCSE English and/or Maths for free at the college!

What will I study?

As part of the course you will develop your academic and practical skills, building your confidence so that you'll be ready to progress to one of the many Access courses available at the college, subject to previous qualifications.

You will learn:

The nature and importance of critical thinking
The key terms relating to critical thinking
The nature of assumption, bias and stereotyping in argument and point of view
How structure and style impact on argument
How to form an argument
How to question an argument or point of view

Discursive writing

You will learn:

How to order and present facts, ideas and opinions
The difference between fact and opinion
How to be able to construct a valid argument in writing

Practical presentation skills

You will learn:

The skills involved in preparing and delivering presentations
How to use different aids and delivery styles
How to plan and deliver a presentation
How to assess your performance and identify areas for improvement

What could I do next?

Following the successful completion of this course you may go on to study one of the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diplomas at the college.
