Course overview

This course would benefit students who have experience in GCSE Dance and outside companies, i.e. Dance school experience. As well as those who want to further develop their skill set in Dance, particularly those who wish to continue to Higher Education and whose career aspirations are in the Performing Arts industry.

Within these components, you will explore and build on a range of technical skills, create your own innovative choreography and analyse professional works from various influential choreographers that demonstrate a range of Dance styles.

You will be encouraged to develop your creative and intellectual capacity, alongside transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

What will I study?

You will study two components.

Component 1

  • Performance and Choreography
  • Solo performance
  • Performance in a quartet
  • Group choreography performance

Component 2

  • Critical Engagement
  • Written exam

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught across three 90 minute lessons per week.

There are two assessments:

Component 1

  • One Practical Exam
  • 80 marks
  • Worth 50% of A-Level

Component 2

  • One Written Exam
  • 2 hours 30 minutes
  • 100 marks
  • Worth 50% of A-Level
  • There are two sections to the exam
    • Section 1; short answer questions and one essay question
    • Section 2; two essay-style questions

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Maths
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE Dance or Performing Arts
  • If you have not taken Dance at GCSE but have extensive experience in Dance or Performing Arts, this will also be accepted.

What could I do next?

You could progress onto a Performing Arts Dance pathway Level 4 course at USP College or consider a career in teaching, performing, choreography, producing, dance physiotherapy, producing, theatre roles, events and many more.

You could also go on to study Higher Education at university in subjects such as Dance and Professional Practice, Dance Studies, Dance Styles, Performance and Choreography.
