Course overview

If you want a career working in Engineering, this is the course for you. You’ll gain the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to begin your engineering career.

The course is a mixture of theory and practical work with an emphasis on understanding the health and safety requirements of working in an Engineering workshop. Due to the practical nature of the course it can be physically demanding at times. Upon successful completion of the Level 1 course, (one year) you will be able to continue to a Level 2 qualification (one year) in Engineering. On passing the level 2 course you can enrol onto the level 3 course which is studying units you have achieved from level 1 and 2 but in greater depth plus other exciting but challenging units that will open doors for a chosen career in Engineering.

What will I study?

During your English lessons, you will practice developing your communication skills including interview skills.

During Maths lessons you will focus on areas you find difficult and develop these during practical lessons to help you relate the learning to real-life situations.

  • Being Organised
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan

As well as a number of modules from the following:

  • Using a Welding Process to Join Materials
  • Manufacturing a Component Using Machining Processes
  • Producing Engineering Drawings Using CAD

You will also take part in the National Citizen Service programme which will involve a week away building your personal and social skills. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and enjoy new experiences. It will help build your confidence. This newfound confidence alongside the qualifications you can achieve from the engineering courses will give you a higher chance for opportunities in a career of your choice.

Entry requirements

  • Grade 2 or above in GCSE English Language and Maths
  • As well as your qualifications, we'll expect you to demonstrate a genuine interest in engineering through your interests or experiences

You will be required to purchase overalls and steel toe capped boots for working in the workshop.

What could I do next?

When you finish this course you could progress to the Level 2 BTEC in Engineering, or begin an Apprenticeship, Traineeship or Supported Internship programme dependent on your individual needs.
