Course overview
This course is the Biomedical Science pathway of the Applied Science qualification.
Biomedical Science is a practical course ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in the medical field, including medical science, pharmaceutical science, or one of the many other fields in the NHS.
This course will give you a broad understanding of scientific principles including; practical microbiological skills, health and diseases, chemical analysis, medical physics applications, genetics and genetic engineering, individual investigative projects and practical scientific skills. You will study all three science disciplines, with a focus towards the biomedical field.
This course is assessed by the use of examinations and coursework. It is ideal for learners who thrive in an engaging hands-on style of learning. Completion of the course will give you a qualification equivalent to 3 A-Levels
Entry requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths.
- Grade 4 or above in at least two Science GCSEs (or equivalent).
What will I study?
You will sit two exams in the first year and a further two in the second. The workload is substantial and good organisational and time management skills are essential. Topics include:
- Principles and application of science
- Practical scientific procedures and techniques
- Science investigation skills
- Genetics and genetic engineering
- Physiology of human body systems
Assessment will be through a mixture of examination and continuous assignments taught through lectures, practical laboratory work, presentations, independent research tasks, trips and guest speakers.

Additional information
You will be expected to purchase a lab coat from the college for approximately £10.
What could I do next?
This qualification could prepare you for work in the science industry, in particular in the NHS and other biomedical fields. You could also progress on to Higher Education to study a range of scientific degrees including: Pharmaceutical Science, Biomedical Science, Forensic Science and Nutritional Science.
