To be a successful Media Producer, you will need to have an excellent eye for detail, be highly organised and have a good understanding of how to work as a freelancer.

Career Overview

Media Producers work on films, TV and radio to create programmes with directors and other production staff. You will arrange funding for projects and keep the schedule to a set timescale and budget.

This is a responsible role and you will be overseeing the process from start to finish.

You could work on anything from 30 second promotional videos to Hollywood films.

As a media producer you will have to

  • Hire staff and create teams for specific projects
  • Find ways to fund your projects through crowdfunding, grants or other financial backers
  • Work with writers and publishers to buy rights to films or TV shows
  • Build contacts in your industry
  • Plan shooting schedules and make sure you have the right members of the team at the right times
  • Follow health and safety, legal requirements and regulations
  • Meet with the director to discuss their requirements
  • Follow the progress of the project and react to delays or issues as they arise

Career Prospects

You could make TV programmes, films, radio or TV commercials and work as either self-employed or on a fixed contract for the duration of a project.

This is a highly competitive industry so taking time to build your skills at college will give you the competitive edge amongst applicants and help you land contracts. You will need to take opportunities and be flexible with your working hours, schedule and even location as some contracts could require you to travel around the world.

If you want to specialise in a particular area, volunteer on similar projects and build up a network of contacts within that field so you hear about new opportunities as they arise.

There’s no fixed promotion but you could start your own studio or work as an executive producer for a TV or film company.
