Create stunning buildings, offices or something completely different as an Architect. If you love design and want to design housing schemes, one-off properties or landmark buildings like the Shard in London then Architecture is the career for you.

Career Overview

Architecture is a creative career which also requires highly technical knowledge. You may create new developments with hundreds of homes, build a completely new property or restore and refurbish an historic building.

You will work with clients to understand their goals and create drawings that will be used by contractors. Architects will usually work on a project from start to finish and work with construction professionals to make sure the build follows the client’s original brief.

As an architect you will have to

  • Use design and engineering skills to
  • Carry out site visits throughout the project to keep up to date with progress and deal with any issues as they arise
  • Prepare planning applications and submit them to local authorities
  • Speak with clients to understand their project and create the initial plans
  • Understand the local environment and how this will affect the design and build
  • Project manage contractors, surveyors and other construction professionals
  • Use computer software to create designs and reports

Career Prospects

Architects can progress quickly and will either work for private companies or set up a business. Joining the Royal Institute of British Architects will help you develop your career and progress into a more senior role. 

After five years’ experience, architects can be awarded fellow of RIBA status. Most senior architects will set up their own company once they have completed projects and built a reputation. You may choose to specialise in residential, environment, urban or many other areas of expertise.
