Another successful CPD day!

Molly tells us about the inspiring people she met

Media Production Level 3 student Molly Ballantyne speaks about the sessions that she attended during the Vocational CPD Day on 11 February 2021.

The day started off with multiple sessions which covered lots of topics for different types of media students.

The first session I attended was the E-portfolio session, which was hosted by the University of the Arts London. The presenter went through the PowerPoint telling us how to create and design an in-depth e-portfolio for when we are applying to universities and/or jobs within the media.

The session was an excellent way to learn and improve on current portfolios we are making. We were able to hear different advice from a professional who works at the University of the Arts London because they have seen thousands of different portfolios and know how to craft a portfolio that makes you stand out against the rest of the applicants.

The next session was a talk with Kana Waiwaku, a recipient of The Getty Images Creative Bursary for 2018 for his body of work on mental illness. Kana is a mental illness advocate and through his images he is trying to spread awareness and make mental health a topic to talk about and not be pushed away and made awkward.

This session was a great way to teach people about how you can portray different images just from different lighting, angles, posing and much more. But also, carrying in that aspect of bringing light on mental illness and trying to make it a discussable topic for young teenagers that might be dealing with this.

The next session was with Chris Musto where he talked about visual art. He works within the music industry as a graphic designer and he spoke about how he was a professional drummer back in the day and how he was a drummer with many classic performers. He talked about how he got his first job at 16 in London working for this small company in the dark room. He then went on to working in more small businesses until 1975. He then ended working with a company that made record covers as a junior designer.

This session was a great way to learn about how graphic design is different from the 70s to the 2000s compared to now. Also it was a great way to learn how to start from a small local shop to working for famous bands around the world. Chris Musto then showed us album covers that he had worked on, including one for the Rolling Stones.

Overall, this CPD day had been another success as they had brought in more inspiring individuals once again to help young adults and teenagers look into their job roles for the future and how to reach and achieve their goals.
