Course overview
Applied Science is a practical course ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in the generic science field, including medical science, pharmaceutical science, analytical scientist, toxicologist or laboratory technician
This course will give you a broad understanding of scientific principles including; practical microbiological skills, health and diseases, chemical analysis, medical physics applications, genetics and genetic engineering, individual investigative projects and practical scientific skills. You will study all three science disciplines, with a focus towards the biomedical field. This course concentrates on the knowledge, skills and techniques required for work in modern analytical sciences.
This course is assessed by the use of examinations and coursework. It is ideal for learners who thrive in an engaging hands-on style of learning. Completion of the course will give you a qualification equivalent to 3 A-Levels
What will I study?
Year 1 will develop your scientific skills and techniques as well as your knowledge of key concepts of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to help develop your understanding of the importance of science in modern forensic investigation. Year 2 will allow you to specialise further by selecting from a range of optional units.
You will sit two exams in your first year and a further two in the second. The workload is substantial and good organisational and time management skills are essential. Topics include:

- Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
- Forensic Evidence Collection and Analysis
- Applications of Organic Chemistry
- Genetics and Genetic Engineering
- Physiology of Human Body Systems

Entry requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths.
- Grade 4 or above in at least two Science GCSEs (or equivalent).
Additional information
You will be expected to purchase a lab coat from the college for approximately £10.
What could I do next?
After USP College many students choose to study forensic science at university, although the combination of units we study gives you a broad range of option including biochemistry, analytical sciences and degree apprenticeships.
