This qualification is the Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate). It is widely recognised by higher education and industry as a vocational qualification of choice at Level 3. It provides meaningful and practical learning experiences across a range of career sectors and is designed to prepare students to progress to higher education as a route to graduate-level employment.

The course is suitable for post-16 students with an interest in health and social care. It is equivalent in size to one A Level and is intended for students who wish to develop their applied knowledge and skills in health and social care alongside two A Levels. Students will engage in a broad investigation of various aspects of the health and social care sector.

What will I study?

The qualification requires students to complete three mandatory units and select one optional unit. The mandatory content makes up 75% of the qualification, and external assessment accounts for 50%.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, and/or BTEC qualification(s) at Level 2.
  • Students may also demonstrate their ability to succeed through relevant work experience, specific aptitude shown through diagnostic tests, or other non-educational experience.
