Coming Full Circle: Emilia Balcombe’s Path from USP Student to Seevic Staff

Emilia Balcombe chose USP College for its welcoming atmosphere and strong creative offer. Studying Visual Design followed by an Art Foundation course, she had the opportunity to explore a wide range of artistic mediums, supported by experienced tutors and specialist facilities. 

Keen to get involved, Emilia embraced student life beyond the classroom. She became an active member of the Student Union, progressing from Student Champion to Vice President and then President. Along the way, she helped at Open Evenings, speaking to prospective students and their families - an experience that pushed her beyond her comfort zone and helped build lasting confidence.

I loved the friendly vibe of the college and the amazing art facilities. I always felt supported here, and I hope to be the same positive influence for students that staff were for me.

Representing the college at a national Student Union conference in Birmingham was another highlight, giving Emilia the chance to learn from others across the UK while proudly representing USP College.

The skills Emilia developed during her time at college, particularly communication and interpersonal skills, have been invaluable. “Joining the Student Union was the best decision I ever made,” she reflects. Once shy and reserved, she grew into a confident leader, comfortable speaking to large audiences and working with people from all backgrounds.

After graduating from Cardiff Metropolitan University in July 2025, Emilia knew she wanted a career focused on supporting students. This led her back to Seevic College, first as a volunteer in Student Services and later as an LRC Assistant in the library. Returning felt like a natural step.
