Course overview

Core Maths - AQA Level 3 Certificate Advanced Mathematical Studies

Core Maths is for students who have achieved a Grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths and who need to be equipped for the mathematical and quantitative demands of HE courses or employment.

It is part of the Government's plan to increase participation in maths post-16, helping to raise the UK's mathematical standards. The ambition is for the majority of students to continue studying maths until the age of 18 by 2020.

The primary focus is on using and applying mathematics and statistics to address authentic problems and real-life scenarios, drawn from study, work and life, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving.  Many roles in the workplace require high levels of budget management and problem-solving skills and Core Maths will be a useful tool in equipping you with these skills.

Students in social sciences, business,  psychology, sciences, and health sciences who are not taking A/AS Level maths may find the Core Maths element useful in preparing for university study where a working application of maths or statistics is required.  A Core Maths grade also helps the students to enhance their GCSE maths grades as well as UCAS points.

Core Maths is looked upon favourably by employers and universities and it has been endorsed by the
Russell Group universities.

Core Maths is an AS Level and is a one year course.
