Access to HE

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is designed for people who have been out of education for some time or for those who left school without the qualifications needed to go straight to university.

It provides you with a good foundation and the skills needed for studying at university level, so you can be confident and well prepared when you go on to study a degree.

It is widely recognised by UK universities, and many actively encourage applications from Access to HE students. More than 20,000 Access to HE students apply for a degree each year and go on to study a wide range of subjects

Adult Education FAQs

Am I too old to study here?

No. We have a large adult student body and courses designed specifically for adults returning to education, retraining, or upskilling.

Do I need qualifications to start?

Entry depends on the course, and many have no formal entry requirements. Our team can talk you through the right starting point.

Is it free?

Some courses can be fully funded, so free to you, if you're eligible. This includes essential English and maths. Where a course isn't free, we'll tell you the cost and the funding options upfront.

What is the Access to HE Diploma and who is it for?

It's a one-year Level 3 course for adults who want to go to university or onto a degree-level course but don't have A-levels. It's funded by an Advanced Learner Loan, and if you go on to complete a higher education course, that loan is written off so you never repay it.

Can I study around work or family?

Yes. Many adult courses run part-time, in the evening, or with flexible timetables built around other commitments.

Will this help me get a job or change career?

Our adult courses are built around local employer needs / career progression.

How do I enrol and when can I start?

You can enrol now for September 2026.

If you're not sure which course fits, contact our team and we'll help you choose.
