Course Overview

Modules
This course will help learners gain an understanding of the engineering and sector as part of the programme, learners will study the following topics:

Processes of production and manufacturing

Materials used in production, manufacturing and fabrication environments.

Specialist machinery utilised in the production and manufacturing environments

Product and project management
-
Quality assurance and quality control
-
Occupational Specialism (either Machining and Toolmaking Technologies or Fabrication and Welding Technologies)
The course is a two-year, technical study programme and includes a mixture of:

Technical knowledge in Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control

Year 1: Engineering Core
-
Year 2: Occupational Specialisms (either Machining and Toolmaking Technologies or Fabrication and Welding Technologies)

Industry placement of 315 hours in the engineering industry.

Maths, English and Digital skills which are embedded throughout the programme
How will I be taught and assessed?
- Learners are assessed by two externally set and marked exams covering knowledge from the engineering core comment element. Both exams are 2.5 hours and have a weighting of 35% of year 1.
- Employer set project (externally marked) covering knowledge and skills from the core component, it is 15.5 hours in duration and has a weighting of 30%
These assessments give learners an overall grade A*-E plus ungraded (U)
- One externally set assignment (internally marked) consists of a project brief presented as client requirements or a specification of work that is realistic to what the learner could encounter in industry. The duration of this assignment is 25 hours.
- The occupational specialism components are graded overall Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded.
Entry Requirements:
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above. This may also include a relevant level 2 qualification
- Grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths & Science

Additional information
You will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during practical lessons. You will be expected to supply your own overalls, safety glasses and boots for approximately £50.
