What is the Lifelong Learning Entitlement?

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement, known as the LLE, is a major reform to student finance in England. From January 2027, it will replace the existing student finance system and Advanced Learner Loans for courses at Levels 4, 5 and 6, creating a single, flexible funding system for post-18 learners.

Applications for LLE funding open in September 2026 for eligible courses and modules starting from January 2027 onwards.

How much can I borrow under the LLE?

The LLE gives eligible learners a tuition funding entitlement worth up to £39,160 at current fee caps, equivalent to four years of full-time post-18 education. Unlike the previous system, this entitlement is measured in credits rather than years, giving you much greater flexibility in how and when you study.

Who is the LLE for?

The LLE will enable individuals between the ages of 18 and 60 to access funding flexibly for full courses and modules, to learn, upskill and retrain.

Whether you are a school leaver, a professional looking to change career, or someone returning to education after a break, the LLE is designed to support you.

Can I still study part-time?

Yes. One of the key features of the LLE is flexibility. The LLE is credit-based, so funding is linked to learning credits.

A traditional full-time year is equivalent to 120 credits, and learners can apply for tuition fee loans for a minimum of 30 credits, up to a maximum of 180 credits in any single course year or 12-month period. This means you can study around work and family commitments.

What can it be used for?

From January 2027, the LLE will fund full courses at Levels 4 to 6, including degrees and technical qualifications, plus modules of high-value technical courses (HTQs) at Levels 4 and 5.

At USP College, we offer HNC and HND programmes at Levels 4 and 5. We will confirm which courses are eligible for LLE funding shortly and update this page when applications open.

What about previous study?

Previous government-funded study will be factored into a learner's residual entitlement under the LLE. The previous rule that restricted funding for equivalent or lower-level qualifications will be removed, which makes retraining significantly more accessible than before.
