Studying a degree at USP College

What is it really like to study for a degree at USP College?

My name is Chanel Berry and I graduated from USP College in 2019 after completing a BA (Hons) Degree in Education Studies and Early Years. Before completing the Level 6 I studied the Foundation Degree in Early Years, still at USP College.

I chose to study at USP after hearing about it from a member of staff. Once I had made the decision that this was the right course I had to think about some practicalities. An important factor for me was how easily I could get there by public transport. The Seevic Campus in Benfleet was ideal as it was well served by a number of bus routes.

I studied the Degree whilst working and fitted studying around my work. Since completing the Degree I have more confidence and have become a more effective practitioner in my role as a pre-school teacher (ages 2-5).

I am extremely thankful for the fantastic job the tutors do, particularly with the effort they put in to getting to know and support each student on an individual level. They truly helped to motivate and inspire me to reach my full potential.

The facilities were amazing but mostly I loved the opportunity to learn through fun activities and learning styles provided. I was blown away with the incredible support that was provided to me by all the tutors both academically and personally.

The class sizes are kept small which ensures that students are able to have a lot of time and interaction with their tutors. Tutors are always available to answer any queries.

I would advise anyone studying this course, and particularly first years, to have the confidence to ask questions and ask for help when you need it. Share your ideas, or concerns, with class members as they also provide valuable support. Make the most of your study time and complete as much work as possible on your university days.

The course instils an abundance of skills that I have been able to transfer to my working practices such as grit and passion and the ability to be a more effective Early Years Practitioner. It gave me greater confidence in my ability and capabilities to carry out the role.

An integral part of the Education Studies and Early Years Degree is the requirement to undertake a research project. I was very interested in how children’s emotional wellbeing is supported in early years’ settings and chose to investigate this further. My research showed that much more could be done to support this and as a result, I gained a qualification in teaching yoga to pre-schoolers which has enabled me to plan and implement yoga sessions within my teaching.

If you are considering a Higher Education or degree course, USP College provides an excellent opportunity in Essex to develop workplace skills and increase your employability.

I would strongly encourage anyone considering the Early Years Degree Course to apply. I promise you will not regret it. It is a fantastic course that will provide you with great opportunities and help you to achieve your goals.
